Can You Use Retinol and AHA/BHA Together? Layering Tips
Retinol (a form of vitamin A) and AHA/BHA (acid-based exfoliants) are two of the most popular "active" skincare ingredients out there. But layering them on the same night is a well-known recipe for irritation. This article explains why the combination can be tricky and how to work both into your routine safely.
Why combining them tends to irritate skin
Retinoids speed up skin cell turnover and soften the outer layer of skin. AHAs (glycolic acid, lactic acid) and BHA (salicylic acid) dissolve and remove that same outer layer. Use both at once and you're essentially exfoliating twice over, which shows up as redness, stinging, dryness, and flaking — classic signs of over-exfoliation. The risk is even higher for sensitive skin or when you're just starting out with either ingredient.
How to combine them safely
- Alternate nights: Use retinol on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and AHA/BHA on Tuesday and Thursday, for example.
- Split AM/PM: On days you really want both, use one in the morning and the other at night.
- Ease in gradually: Start at just twice a week and increase frequency only once your skin has adjusted.
- Never skip moisturizer and sunscreen: Both ingredient types increase sun sensitivity, so daytime SPF is non-negotiable.
How to spot them on an ingredient label
Check the INCI (ingredient list) on the packaging for these names to identify each group.
- Retinoids: Retinol / Retinal / Retinaldehyde / Retinyl Palmitate / Adapalene
- AHA: Glycolic Acid / Lactic Acid / Mandelic Acid
- BHA: Salicylic Acid
When you're using several products, it's easy to miss that these are spread across different items in your routine. Cross-checking everything you own is the only sure way to know.
